Web Administrator
CIRES/NSIDC Professional Research Assistant

Here is your chance to make a difference in the world of climate change. The National Snow and Ice Data Center is looking for a Web Administrator. NSIDC is a University of Colorado center and a component of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES). NSIDC manages and distributes scientific data, creates tools for data access, supports data users, performs scientific research, and educates the public about the cryosphere. You will be involved with the delivery and distribution of satellite derived data for the scientific study of the polar regions.

Overview

The Web Administrator will maintain the NSIDC web site (http://nsidc.org), provide web technology solutions and services to improve the efficiency of NSIDC processes, and ensure the effectiveness of web services and programs. As web administrator you will build, manage, and administer Apache web servers, including web server configurations and site security. You will also create access reports and logs and monitor the site for acceptable performance and user accessibility. The position will involve proactively implementing and maintaining Internet based technology to improve process efficiency.

Duties

• Build, manage, and administer Apache web servers in a Linux environment.
• Manage a customized dynamic content system.
• Develop and report access statistics from the NSIDC web site.
• Provide technical expertise regarding the implementation of middleware applications.
• Work closely with other IT groups and customers to gather the infrastructure and middleware requirements for their web based applications.
• Work closely with engineering to understand new applications that need to be delivered to production. Assist with project evaluation and sizing. Create and execute deployment plans for these applications.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot web application issues.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Must have in-depth knowledge of Apache/Tomcat web server.
• Proficiency using Unix operating system - experience with is Linux preferred.
• Must have the ability to coordinate work projects, determine priorities, set deadlines and complete projects accordingly.
• Experience with perl, cgi scripts, and web application framework.
• Knowledge of database application development with Sybase, and MySQL.

Desirable Skills

• Able make simple code changes and fix minor bugs.
• Knowledge of Linux system administration.
• Understanding of XML technologies (e.g., XSLT, XML Schemas) and Web standards.
• Experience with LAMP applications is a plus.
• Experience with wikis is a plus.
• Comfortable working with other web applications: Tomcat, Rails, Mongrel.
• Familiarity with programming languages: Java, PHP, XML.
